Education for Sustainability
Rob Hopkins writes a wonderful blog from Totnes in Devon UK called Transition Culture: An Evolving Exploration into the Head, Heart and Hands of Energy Descent. On the sidebar is a box for Tags, and there are over 100 posts with the tag Education for Sustainability. They are worth exploring.
Tonight I was thinking of a post about a British reality TV show called Jaimie's School Diners. I see a connection between what we eat and what our kids eat and our feelings and relationship to the Earth, but I'll admit it's a bit oblique. What Hopkins does in his post is to distill several key lessons about the chef's approach to chanigng school lunches around for education for sustainability. The whole post is worth a read, and certainly the blog is worth a visit, but in list form here are ten lessons Hopkins draws from the show:
- Start Where People Are At.
- Don't Preach.
- Be Real.
- Don't Assume People in Charge Will Be Resistant.
- Don't Give Up.
- Appeal to Core Values.
- Seek Out the People Who Can Carry It.
- Create a Sense of Collective Adventure.
- Use Shock Tactics Sparingly.
- Be Compassionate.
